As I watch the continuing coverage of the tragic situation in Texas and the coming storm hitting the South I found myself reminded of Mr. Roger’s story about his mom telling him to look for the helpers in scary situations.
I’ve found myself looking for the helpers in the news coverage and in spite of all the horror and tragedy, I’ve found myself inspired by all the courageous helpers that have, and continue to, show up.
This has gotten me to thinking about our own personal tragedies. The ones that don’t get splashed on the evening news. The ones that perhaps even our friends or family don’t know about. Is it possible to find helpers even then? How do we find helpers in our lives when our lives feel so out of control? At some point, we find the courage to ask for help. At some point, we realize we simply can’t rescue ourselves and we need a helper. And then we find, as Mr. Roger’s mother new, that helpers do indeed show up. Even in places where help feels unlikely to be found.

I hope if you find yourself in need of a helper, you will reach out and ask. You may find yourself amazed at the helpers who respond.
